I actually have another hobby. here's my wood work projects. just recently i got a digital camera, so i hope to keep this updated.
LOG CARVINGS
i've taken on a new interest of carving small logs. i want to do/try something no one else is doing out there.
- dragonfly and ivy
my first real attemp at carving something. this was done on oak. i think normally people would overlook these pieces of the tree. this was made for my grandmother, who i give to soon.

- Sunbird
made for my brother(jeff) and his wife(yvette). this was my 2nd log carving. they're interest in birds inspired this second piece.

- Boston Ivy
traced actual boston ivy leaves onto the wood and carved them out. also have a clock face laying partially hidden, with numbers burned in. made for my mom, this was fun.

one of many log carvings i made, but never gave away. i'd start something, not like it and put it aside.

- sycamore plate
ok its not on a log, but a cool idea i had. took an acutal leaf and traced it out on some maple. from there cut out the shape on my scroll saw. next drew ans carved the picture. it came out very nice.

Other stuff
- 2 letter openers
some rough looking letter openers i made for christmas, 2 years ago. left side is purple heart, right side is padauk.
- Nut Bowl
made this for my mom, for mothers day 2004. its a pine burl, i think, that looks like a large nut. no major power tools used. just a dremel and chisels.

- display box
one of the many display boxes i've made for my detecting finds. this one is made of Padauk, finshed with tung oil.
- shelf display
this is a simple box with small wooden trays. the trays were routed and set at an angle to display small stuff.
- large bird feeder
i wanted to be able to feed all the animals. this feeder attracts bluejays, small birds, doves and squirrels.
- Large RedWood vase
this is my latest project. it stands a little over a foot tall and is over 6inches wide at the top and tapers down. i have carved this from a solid redwood block. i shaped it using a hack saw and a hand planer. the inside was created using various forstner bits and wood chisels. after a rough hollowing, i made a wavy cut at the top, exposing the inside. here's another view Another look

Carob Burl and redwood burl Boxes
here are 2 burl boxes. the one on the left will be the redwood. its nice and dark. it has a solid base and is hollowed out by hand. the lid is made with a hand made insert, so it will only fit one way.
the carob burl was really tough. it started out as a rectangular piece. i hand shaped one side round and cut 1/4 of its thickness lengthwise to make a lid. Another view

Apple Burl Box
here was my first attemp at hand shaping a piece of burl. this started as an irregular piece of apple burl. this is one of my favorites.Thanks to my Dad for taking the pics.
